Assessment of white asbestos fiber concentration in the working environment: findings from airborne dust sampling at roofing sheet manufacturing facilities in Vietnam

Between April 15 and 19, 2025, a multidisciplinary delegation comprising experts from the Russian Federation and Thailand, in collaboration with Viet Nam Institute of Strategy and Policy for Industry and Trade, conducted an on-site assessment at multiple roofing sheet manufacturing facilities across Northern, Central, and Southern Vietnam. The objective was to collect airborne dust samples for the evaluation of white asbestos fiber concentrations in the occupational environment.

At each factory, air samples were systematically collected from five key locations identified as having the highest risk of white asbestos fiber dispersion. These locations included: (i) the raw material handling zone where white asbestos bags are opened and processed; (ii) the production line of roofing sheets; (iii) the storage area for white asbestos raw materials; (iv) the product assembly zone; and (v) the disposal site for asbestos-containing waste.

In total, 15 air samples were collected and subsequently transported to the Russian Federation for laboratory analysis. The analysis was conducted by Russian experts using optical microscopy, in accordance with internationally recognized methodologies.

The results, as reported by the Russian specialists, indicated that none of the samples exceeded the maximum permissible exposure limit for white asbestos fibers as defined by current Vietnamese occupational health standards. Specifically, all 15 samples recorded average 8-hour exposure concentrations significantly below the regulatory threshold of 0.1 fibers per milliliter of air.

A comprehensive analytical report detailing the methodology, sample sites, and findings was formally submitted to the Ministry of Industry and Trade via the Trade Representative Office of the Russian Federation in Vietnam.
